Specifics: The Yoshiyama Award for Exemplary Service to the Community recognizes outstanding young people who have taken action to address social, economic or cultural challenges in their communities. The Award is given annually to eight to twelve high school seniors from around the United States. It is awarded solely on the basis of community service activities that foster longer term community change. The Award is accompanied by a gift of $5,000, dispensed over two years. Funds are used at the recipient’s discretion.

This is NOT an award for academic achievement. It is NOT a scholarship. Grade point averages, SAT scores, and school club memberships are not considered in the selection process.

Nominations submitted by teachers, mentors, youth development professionals or other adults familiar with the nominee’s community involvement will be reviewed. Family members (parents, siblings, grandparents, aunts, uncles) may not nominate their relatives and students may not nominate themselves.
