Family Math

Family Math On one level, the PCA Program's Family Math is an opportunity for students and their families to work on hands-on academic activities. Family Math introduces parents and their children to ideas that help them improve their mathematics skills and gain appreciation for math. Parents and students work together on: word problems, logical reasoning, measurements, geometry, spatial thinking, probability, statistics, calculators, estimation, and arithmetic. Family Math lessons are based on the school mathematics curriculum.

On another level, Family Math is a unique opportunity for students to spend time with the their families in a fun, academically-enriching environment. Often, it is the first opportunity for students to interact with their families and the families of other students in such an environment thereby, in many ways, promoting and strengthening family and community ties.

These classes are taught by EBC college students working under the direction of a teacher trained by Family Math. Family Math is one of the EQUALS programs at the Lawrence Hall of Science in Berkeley. EQUALS programs promote equity in mathematics education for all learners.

This program is available for students and parents enrolled in the Pre-Collegiate Academy.
